How To Use Email Marketing To Grow Your Business
This class is about how you can use email to effectively communicate with your customers, and in the process increase business profits.
Hi, my name is Iszuddin Ismail (but you can call me Dino).
Let me tell you how I began using email marketing in my business and what it has done for me.
I have been making a full-time living from the Internet for the past three years now. And along the way, I begin to study marketing. To be able to survive online, that’s the number one skill that you need - marketing. Because the rest of the things like how to build a website, domain names… all those can be outsourced.
But when it comes to how to promote your business, you have to start to think about those yourself. I had no choice but to learn it all myself.
This is when I was introduced to the idea of a mailing list.
Doing your business online, I keep hearing (reading) marketing experts and gurus chanting, “The money is in the list. The money is in the list.”
What this means is that I need to build myself a mailing list. A mailing list is a database of email subscribers that I have collected over a period of time, which I can email to anytime I want.
Testing out a this strategy, I began the work to build myself a list. I put together some ebooks what I have written and give them away for free. Of course, people would have to give me their name and email address before I give them the ebooks. On my website, visitors only have to enter their name and email address, and the downloadable ebook will be sent to them automatically.
All that can be automated with a good mailing list software.
Over a period of time, my mailing list grew bigger. Later I put together a referral system. And my mailing list grew even bigger. Right now, I have about 10,000 subscribers in my database.
But even when I my database only had 1,000 subscribers, I already saw the potential. With a mailing list, my income became more steady and predictable.
Why Email Marketing for Offline Businesses?
My wife and I, we like to go for massages. We always go for Thai massage in Kuala Lumpur. One massage parlour we visited had a special offer. The offer was, customers who arrive before 12 noon will get a 50% discount on the second hour.
The hourly rate was RM50. If we take a 2-hour session, that means we pay RM50 for the first hour and only RM25 for the second. That totals up to RM75, instead of RM100.
I thought that was a great offer. We took up that offer.
But my mind kept thinking about how nobody really knows about their offer. Customers who walked in before 12 noon would be lucky. But those that happens to come by after 12 noon would be left out from the offer.
Looking at their current situation, the only way I know they would be able to get the words out about that offer was to advertise.
If only they had a mailing list…
This is the point where I start to look at applying email marketing strategies for offline businesses.
Simple Gestures Go A Long Way…
I can’t stop thinking about the massage parlour.
Imagine if this is your business. And this is how you operate your business.
First you make every new customer register themselves. You are giving a personalised service anyway. It’s not just a simple cash and carry store. There’s no reason why customers would refuse.
When I was there, I had to wait at least about 5 minutes before I can go into the room for my massage. This is a great opportunity to hand over a form and a pen to the customer. At least they won’t feel the bored while waiting for the room to be prepared.
At the end of the day, you would dump all of your new contacts into your mailing list software. And the software would process all new contacts, sending each one of them a thank you email. The thank you email would also ask them for feedbacks so that I can further improve my services at the massage parlour.
Now imagine this. After having a massage at your parlour, your customer continued her day, shopping and going to the movies. Arriving home, she opened up her email software and there it was. Your Thank-You email…

More Things You Can Do With Email Marketing…
This is just one simple example of what you can do with a good email marketing plan.
There is a lot more that you can do.
- At the end of the month, you can send offers to your subscribers about next month’s offer.
- If you are an MLM person, you drop the contact details of your new member into a mailing list programmed to send out a 7-Day Action Guide course delivered via email, one each day, automatically.
- If you are an insurance agent, you can drop the contact details of your new clients sending them a thank you note automatically.
- If you need to relocate your business to a new location, you can immediately send the details to all of your existing customers. You don’t have to lose a customer.
- You can have a series of email pre-written and delivered to your new customers, educating them about your business, products and services.
- You can send customers a simple newsletter each month just so that they won’t forget about you and what you do.
- If you are at a networking event, you can drop details from the business cards you collected to remind them about yourself and offer your help, if they need any.
- If you are a fashion designer or a boutique owner, you can send your clients with a list of your new designs. Emails will contain information about your work in the previous month, with links to the photos on your website.
- If you are freelancer, you can share with your clients information about running a small business while reminding them about your services, whether it’s designing, book keeping, accounting, consulting, or anything else.
- If you are restaurant owner, you can send customers about the weekly or monthly specials, with photos of recent events done at your store. Every now and then, you can send a special discount voucher.
The possibilities are endless.
